Welcome, Harry! A Good Thing’s first volunteer
During National Volunteer Week, we launched our volunteering programme. We’re delighted to welcome our first volunteer to the A Good Thing team: welcome, Harry!
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I'm Harry, a 21-year-old undergraduate History student from Southeast London. Previously an IT Project Manager.
Why did you choose to volunteer with A Good Thing?
During my time as a Project Manager, I started to understand and appreciate the role of multi-national businesses in supporting charities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to complete their life-changing work.
More recently, I undertook a week of volunteering with an NGO in Brussels, where I learned that much of the furniture and IT equipment at the organisation’s head office had been donated by businesses of varying sizes. I was so impressed by this that when I came across A Good Thing, an organisation that enables these kinds of fruitful donations in the UK, I knew I had to apply!
What’s your role as part of the volunteering programme?
I have now officially joined the A Good Thing team as a volunteer ‘local champion’! I’m working to raise awareness of A Good Thing within my local area by spreading the word among local businesses. I’ll be helping businesses to identify items they may be storing that are no longer needed, but which an amazing local charity would instantly snap up!
What do you hope to learn from your volunteering experience?
As a result of this experience, I hope to gain:
An understanding of the needs of the charities signed up to A Good Thing, and an appreciation of how businesses can best support these charities
Some valuable connections in the charity sector
Experience of communicating and working with small to medium-sized businesses
