A Good Thing exists to allow the sharing of unwanted and surplus business items, to prevent them from being disposed of (by any means). A Good Thing channels items into the local sharing/circular economy. A Good Thing stipulates that items are listed and offered to local charities before they are handled as waste.

Items listed on offer by a company are not collected or stored by A Good Thing: A Good Thing acts solely as an online matchmaking service between businesses and charities. The app operates at a local level, with the majority of items listed being donated to registered charitable organisations within a 20-mile radius. It is the responsibility of the charity to arrange the collection or delivery of the items they request.

A Good Thing’s operations fall outside the UK Government's current rules (2023) for using, treating, storing and disposing of waste, and therefore A Good Thing does not require a waste management permit.
