We want businesses to be reassured that their donated items are put to good use. This document explains who may join A Good Thing as a ‘charity’, and how we verify your eligibility.

To be eligible to join as a charity, you need to be, or have, one of the following:

  • Registered charity (Charity Commission of England and Wales)

  • Registered charity (Charity Commission of Northern Ireland)

  • Registered charity (Scottish Charity Regulator)

  • Community Interest Company (CIC)

  • Community Benefit Society (CBS)

  • HMRC Charity Tax Status

Before you can request offers using the application, we will need to verify your status. We will verify both your email address and your eligibility. This is normally a fast and simple process.

Verifying your email address

When you sign up to A Good Thing, you supply an email address for your account. We will send an email to this address asking you to validate the address by clicking a link in the email.

Verifying your eligibility

Once we have verified your email address, we need to verify that you represent the charitable organisation you claim, and that the organisation is eligible. How we verify your eligibility depends on your charity type.

Registered charity

If you are a registered charity, we use the charity registration database to automatically verify your eligibility.

Your eligibility will be automatically verified if:

  • Your email address is the same as the one registered with the charity commission.

  • Your email address is in the same domain (e.g. mycharity.com) as the website address registered with the charity commission.

If it is not possible to automatically verify your eligibility, we will contact you to ask you for proof that you represent the registered charity.

CIC, CBS or HMRC Charity Tax Status

It is not possible for us to automatically verify these types of organisation. We will contact you to ask you for:

  • Proof that the organisation is eligible (e.g. CIC or CBS company number, or HMRC tax documentation)

  • Proof that you represent the organisation (e.g. official correspondence sent to the registered organisation address)

If you have any questions regarding the process, contact us at [email protected].
