Support your local Riding for the Disabled Association group by using A Good Thing

Over the summer A Good Thing has welcomed national charity Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). We have also been delighted to register some of the RDA’s member groups from across the whole of the UK – from Devon to Dundee – including our very first charity in Northern Ireland! Keep reading to find out more about this amazing charity, the opportunities it provides in your local community, and how your business can support your local group by using the A Good Thing app.

The charity and its local groups

The Riding for the Disabled Association is a national organisation committed to providing life-changing experiences for disabled children and adults across the UK. Member groups across the country provide opportunities for disabled people to take part in horse-riding, carriage driving and vaulting.

The charity is made up of a huge network of local groups, with armies of fantastic volunteers. Each group is unique and needs a vast array of tangible items alongside monetary donations to enable it to continue to provide its excellent services.

But it’s not just about the horses! Away from riding, the RDA groups offer many activities for local people within the community. One example is “Tea with a Pony”: a simple yet very effective session in which local care home residents and those living in their own homes are invited to enjoy a cup of tea and cake in the company of a pony or two, while revisiting memories from years gone by. Other activities include arts and crafts, or the opportunity to spend time in a relaxing sensory garden. Some RDA groups simply provide a welcoming space for participant’s parent and carers to sit down for a cup and tea and a chat.

The projects

With hungry horses to feed, shoe, keep warm and provide veterinary care for, the costs for these amazing groups can run high. But the little things can make all the difference: receiving tangible items can allow creative ideas to flow without the spend.

The ask

Lots and lots of RDA groups have now joined A Good Thing. We’ve asked them what they need, and the list is vast. It includes:

  • Folding tables

  • Quadbike and trailer

  • Reception desk

  • Galvanised corrugated metal roofing

  • Lockable filing cabinets

  • Benches

  • Gardening equipment (including seeds)

  • Wood stain and outdoor paint

  • Picket fencing

  • Furniture suitable for elderly guests

  • Trees and shrubs

  • Crafting items

  • Stationery, including whiteboard markers, paper and envelopes

  • A tractor

And of course…

  • Any horse care-related items

Can you help?

Do you have any of the items listed above that are no longer in use and that you would be able to donate?

If you do, the RDA groups will be thrilled!

Please go to www.agoodthing.org.uk and click on ‘Sign up’. It takes 30 seconds to register with us, and you can then post the item(s) you’re offering. Thank you so much in advance!
