An interview with Alisha, a wonderful wordsmith
A Good Thing's good newss stories really come to life through the skills of our dedicated volunteers. We're delighted to introduce, volunteer copywriter Alisha, a recent Film and Screen Studies graduate who's bringing fresh creativity to our communications team. As our Copywriter, she's already crafted three compelling articles that showcase the magic of our matches let’s – hear more about her journey from university graduate to purpose-driven storyteller.
Why did I choose AGT?
Leaving university, I struggled to find a job in a creative field, which is what I would like to do. I have heard volunteering is a great way to improve your experience and make your CV more impressive, so I started looking on Charity Job. I saw a listing for A Good Thing, did some research on the organisation, and immediately applied. A Good Thing really aligns with my values on environmentalism and I thought the whole premise was such a good idea. From the get-go, it was a charity I definitely wanted to be a part of.
What is my role?
My role within AGT is Copywriter. I take matches made through the app, interview the charities and companies involved, plan the angle and structure of the good news story ready to be posted on AGT's blog.
What do I hope to learn?
On top of developing my writing skills and gaining experience in copywriting, I hope to learn everything else that goes around writing an article. This is something I have been learning over the past couple of months with AGT; there is lots of prep that goes into writing for a blog, so learning the most effective way to keep on top of this, how to speak effectively and professionally to interviewees and what angles to take that will be interesting to the reader are all invaluable lessons.
Also, I hope to learn to trust in my creative abilities. Writing is something I am passionate about, and often do in my spare time, but I sometimes find it difficult to share this with other people or believe that it's any good. It's easy to pick holes in your own work, so with AGT I hope to be (and have been) believing in myself and enjoying the process, without fear of failure!
Success so far:
I have completed three articles about successful matches, and so far they've gone really well! That for me is a big success, seeing these projects through from start to finish and having them out there to promote amazing organisations.
A personal success is watching myself improve with each passing article; I am proud of all my work so far, but I have noticed a change for the better as time goes on. My latest article, How far can travel mugs really travel? has an angle that I think is engaging, and it really represents what AGT is trying to achieve.
