Cables and leads stretch all the way from London to Northern Ireland

Charities helping other charities

In spring 2024 Suzannah Pearson, Operations Lead at The Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in central London, kicked off a large-scale refurbishment project at the charity’s premises, and knew the A Good Thing platform would soon become her friend:

The Paul Mellon Centre Team

“We needed to clear out lots of unused equipment and furniture but were very keen to limit adding to landfill wherever possible. As a charity ourselves, we also wanted to support other charities and send these items to good homes.”

Charities and other nonprofit organisations make use of A Good Thing surprisingly often to give things away to their fellow charities. Often a charity will tell us that it’s been given things that it doesn’t need, and is keen to pass them on so as to benefit another charity instead.

Cables to connect

One of the things Suzanne was tasked with rehoming was a large surplus of ethernet cables that were no longer needed, as she explains:

“I didn’t think we would easily find someone to take them, but was delighted when Aspire Media requested them. The A Good Thing system allowed for efficient liaison with Robert at Aspire, and we posted the cables to Coleraine in Northern Ireland not long after making that connection.”

Robert Campbell is Operations Director at Aspire Media N.I., a social enterprise based in Coleraine. The organisation’s mission is to revolutionise community-driven media production and ownership within the local community. Robert recalls seeing the offer appearing on the A Good Thing platform:

“We were happy to take all the cables. We knew they would be useful as additional leads for our networking, and our team would be sure to have leads when onsite doing their work. We were happy to cover the costs of postage to Northern Ireland.”

More efficient, better for our operations

Robert told us that the leads would be invaluable:

“These will be great for cable management. Better than the massive, lengthy 2 to 3-metre cables that we’re currently using. The smaller the cable, the less room they take up. We’ll now be able to free up space in the IT suite, and free up extra wiring that can be used elsewhere.”

Two happy customers

Robert was very happy with his first interaction with the A Good Thing platform:

“I’m a web designer myself, and can tell you your website is so easy to use. As soon as the match came through, Suzanne was so fantastic. She was super accommodating, and made sure everything was 100%. I sent her an email recently and thanked her, A Good Thing is a brilliant site!”

Suzanne has been equally positive about her experience of using the platform:

“Using the A Good Thing platform was seamless, and any queries we did have were dealt with very quickly by their customer support team. We have continued our relationship with A Good Thing post-renovations too, to ensure we dispose of unwanted items sustainably via donation. I would recommend them highly.”
