Laptops needed for children with barriers to access, as Literacy Pirates battle the digital divide

Literacy Pirates, a London-based education charity, is in need of 20 new laptops as it continues to develop its new online offering onboard its new virtual ship. Can your firm help?

Founded in 2011, the Literacy Pirates are committed to ensuring that no child is left behind on their learning adventures due to the digital divide. With Covid-19 exacerbating problems in attaining educational equality and widening the digital divide, their work is more important than ever. As a result, they’re growing their online programme across London.

Literacy Pirates is in the process of building a ‘tech library’ to loan out digital devices. They’d like to be able to support all children referred to their Virtual Ship. The charity ensures that devices go to the children who need them most by working closely with partner schools – who are provided with the devices and then distribute them to families they identify as being priority beneficiaries.

The children in Literacy Pirates’ target group often have limited access to fit-for-purpose devices with which they can comfortably and effectively attend online sessions. The charity is trying to relieve the stress on families by ensuring they have the option to borrow a laptop.

The Virtual Ship is currently working with over 100 children (or Young Pirates!) across five East London boroughs. The hope is to have an additional 200 Young Pirates online next year and over 700 by 2024.
