Want to make a difference in your local community? Volunteer with A Good Thing!

At A Good Thing we’re passionate about the power of local – we know that those connections within communities are often the most powerful ones. That’s why we knew we wanted to get a network of community communications champions on board as soon as our pilot was over, and we had rolled out across the UK. Demand is growing and we need your help to spread the word!

A Good Thing started life as a local pilot: when we set the organisation up in 2020 we launched in the Thames Valley, where we had personal connections. We had lived and worked in the area for many years, and had built some excellent personal links with both businesses and charities – but we also had plenty of that local knowledge that’s so vital to making something like A Good Thing really fly!

Now we need help!

Communications volunteer

We would love to get local champions on board across the whole of the UK – volunteers whose mission it will be to spread the word about A Good Thing within their communities.

Come on board as a community champion: use your communications skills to drive more businesses and charities to sign up.

You’ll be using your connections (friends, family, colleagues, neighbours...), as well as your insights into the local area, to help us to build the numbers of businesses and charities signing up in your part of the UK. You might do this through making connections with businesses in your area, taking A Good Thing to the doorstep. Or you could approach businesses virtually, using your expert written communication skills to create communications that will engage and inspire them. You’ll definitely be using social media and your brilliant online networking skills to build links and relationships where you live.

Come with us on our journey towards reducing waste and boosting wonderful local charities at the same time.

We're thrilled by our ongoing growth, which means we often have exciting new opportunities for volunteers to get involved in our operations and communications. If you're interested in lending a hand, take a look at our current volunteering positions below:

Legal advisor - position now filled

Help us to shape brand-new online charity platform A Good Thing! Use your legal expertise and experience to help us formulate our donations policy, our detailed terms and conditions of usage, our volunteer contract, and plenty more.

You’ll be using your legal experience, ideally in the charity sector, to do something really rewarding. You'll be advising us and helping us to firm up some really key areas of our operations. We won't need much of your time, but your advice will be hugely valuable to us.

Copywriter - position now filled

A Good Thing is looking for an experienced copywriter to help us with our 'good news stories'. These are the case studies that describe the matches that have taken place via our platform. They are heartwarming, wonderful stories about the items that have eben donated, and about the impact those items have had.

These short pieces go onto our blog and are also heavily promoted via our social media channels. They really help to raise awareness of our platform and also to encourage more businesses to sign up and donate things to their local communities.

Copywriter (short project) - position now filled

A Good Thing is looking for an experienced copywriter for an intense, short project. We have a backlog of ‘charity needs’ that we have registered but have not yet had time to write up.

When charities join A Good Thing, they are invited to share their needs with us – the things their charity could really make use of. We then write these up into short (150/200-word) pieces that go onto our blog and are also heavily promoted via our social media channels. We work hard to match these charity needs up with local businesses that can fulfil the needs.

We’re currently working with several volunteers across the UK, and we’d love to welcome you to the team.

You can find all the details of all our current volunteer roles here.
